It's cool to die in movies and books and stuff. It's good to kill yourself if you just feel like you can't take it anymore.
That's not okay.
In the wake of Robin Williams' death, suicide awareness has blown up on social media, and that's a good thing. What's not a good thing is the way Williams' suicide is being portrayed.
For instance, the Academy tweeted a picture of Williams' character from Aladdin hugging the title character with the caption 'Genie, you're free'.
I understand they probably meant well, but if you're going to tell me that that tweet doesn't condone suicide as an escape, you're gonna have a hard time.
I would never say that depression is just something that's 'in your head'. Yes, chemical imbalances do happen, and that is often a contributor to depression. And yes, medication can help that. But it's not a cure. Depression is a lack of joy. And yes, you can even be a Christian and be depressed.
There are times we feel hopeless.
There is always hope.
God is hope.
He gives grace to sinners, love to the unloved, and joy to the broken.
I guess people who commit suicide think they're doing their families and friends a favor, and that's not true.
Don't give up on yourself.
God never has.
