Altos Just Need a Little Love

Mmk, if you want a scary accurate picture of my last semester in college, here it is.
And even if you don't want it, here it is.

One of my (3 credit) classes was cancelled about 2 or 3 weeks before classes started.
I was rather upset about this, but I realized that now I was a credit or two short of what I needed to qualify as "full time".
I then proceeded to look at every single 1 credit classes offered, but - alas - most were science labs which I did not want to take, because I had just taken a lab, and I specifically took the science I did this semester so that I would not have to take a lab.
I can't remember if I already had 2 PE classes or not, but if I didn't, I added one.
And I was still one short.

Easy.
I'd take chorus.

Now, let me just say that I basically grew up in choirs in church.
2nd grade to like . . . 10th or something.
I already knew my range (not a tough one for people who know me and have heard me speak) and I had a friend who had loved it the semester before, so I was like "Well, why not?"

I actually really do enjoy it, but it's reminded me of something that had crossed my mind even in the church choirs: altos get none of the love, man.

Let me explain: people tend to fawn over the sopranos because they get these beautiful, complicated melodies, and I'm sure they are vocally challenging.
(Totally not dissing sops here.)
But you know what's harder than taking the melody?
Having to stay on the same note while they've got an aria.
That is NOT easy.
At all.
Same is true for the basses when the tenors get the melody.
Altos and basses just have this one-note samba 4 times out of 5.
Every now and then we get to do something nice that actually makes sense, but most of the time?
Nope, we're the backbone making the sops sound even better.

And if you're not into chorus, sorry, but it was either this or talking about playing Lego Star Wars for the first time in forever last night, so count your blessings.
